How versions are numbered​

A product version has four parts, x.y.z.t:

  • x — platform generation. It changes only with a fundamental change of the platform's architecture.
  • y — release line. It increases every time a release is promoted to production (main).
  • z — staging release. It increases every time the current development state is promoted to staging.
  • t — build. It increases with every image built from development.

When a part increases, the parts to its right start again at 0.

Until October 2026 versions had three parts. They are listed here under their four-part number, and each page states the number it was first published under. Up to 1.14 the last number became z (1.12.1 is now 1.12.1.0). From 1.16 on the last number counted builds: those builds are grouped under staging releases, and t counts the builds within each one (1.18.15 is now 1.18.1.10). Image tags of those versions did not change (for example staging-1.18.15), and the earlier page addresses forward to the new ones.
